Images of Life

In the year 2000 Angelika Kampfer was invited by Prof. Dr. Jörg Keckstein to complete a photo documentary on the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at the local hospital in Villach. Over a period of three months she was completely free to move around in every part of the hospital. The result was an impressive documentation on surgery, birth and dying, on conversations, loneliness and help offered.

"I stepped on totally unknown territory. I had never been an in-patient myself. I had never witnessed a woman giving birth, and I had never sat by the bed of a dying person. It was not before recording everyday life in a hospital that I realized what an imprint such situations leave on a person's life and to what extent such decisive experiences have been moved from the sphere of a private house to public institutions.

I have worked as a professional photographer in many hospitals all over the world. To sum up my observations I would like to say that we hardly ever acknowledge the luxury medical care we enjoy in Austria. We take everything for granted and demand more and more."
